The village council will be using this blog to publish the minutes and agendas of the parish council meetings. This should make it easier for us to stay in touch with events and become more involved with our village. The minutes of the 8-12-2008 meeting are now available as a downloadable PDF (download a free reader from the Adobe website if you don’t already have it).

As some of you may be aware, St Edmundsbury are considering their future development plans and have issued “Core Strategy Preferred Options (view online or PDF)” and “Strategic Sites (view online or PDF)”  documents on their website at http://stedsbc-consult.limehouse.co.uk/portal. The relevant map of Lackford with the proposed sites is below.

SS51 is proposed for residential use, although the council comments that it is within a Special Landscape Area and that protected and notable species have been identified at this location. SS54 is for mixed use and again is within a Special Landscape Area.

I’m sure this will get discussed in the upcoming parish meetings, but in the meantime here is a little poll to see what the general feeling is.

Once again Lackford will be hosting a “bring a firework” party on Saturday 8th November. The Gough family has been kind enough to allow us to use part of their land to the right of Lackford Lane. This is not the triangular field that we have used in the past, but an adjacent piece of land.  Fireworks and bonfire will be lit at 18:00 onwards.  Please note that this is a “private party” open to everyone in the village, and their family and friends.  It is not open to the public at large.

You can help in several ways:

· Donation of one or two large aerial fireworks by 7^th Nov to 10 Old Bury Road

· Preparing some food or drink to share – please contact Francesca Ober

· Making a donation towards the cost of organising the event, on the night

· Collecting fuel and building the bonfire on Nov 8^th.  Bonfire building will start at 10:00 (if you can help please meet at the Old Bury Road bus stop)

Dear Friends

I had a call this afternoon from the owner of the set-aside field. His tractor, parked by the pill-box has been vandalised by cutting the leads on the starter motor. He suspects this may be a reaction to the realigning of the fence at the bottom of the field as several of the posts have been removed and thrown into bushes. He wants to make it clear that he has no intention of withdrawing the permissive path round the field, and I have offered to cut a new path so that there should be no interruption of our enjoyment of this privilege. I cannot believe there is anyone in Lackford who would do such a silly act of vandalism, and suspect it is probably youngsters from outside the village. It would be such a shame if we lost the permission to walk round the setaside through someone else’s bad behaviour. Please keep a watchful eye (and ear) to help prevent further vandalism. If anyone has information about this incident, please tell Mr Aitkens or the police.

This year the Lackford Fete will be held on Saturday 28th June at Maple House Paddock. Sponsored by the Lackford Community Council, the day will be started off by a charity run, The Lackford Mile, which takes a circuit around the set-aside field behind Holden and Kent Road houses. After lunch, the Fete will carry on throughout the afternoon, leading to the Ceilidh in the evening. We have arranged sunshine from a creditable supplier, but this will be subject to there being no industrial action by local vicars or Shell tanker drivers!

The Lackford Mile. Please come and support the Lackford Mile, even if you walk or are pushed around in your pram we want you to join in and support the fund-raising event. Adults £3.00, Under 16 £1.50. Registration will start at 10:00 at the field gate at the junction of Church Lane and Holden Road. At 10:30 the race will start. Medals will be presented at the Fete for the winning man, woman, boy (under 16). and girl (under 16).

How you can help – enter the race or volunteer to manage the race as a timing judge. We need four timing judges.

The Fete. The Fete will start at 14:30 and will include a bouncy castle for small children, a bungee-run for older people, some stalls for children, a family heptathlon and a teas and cakes stall. A licenced bar will be open until late and a food bar will be selling food at reasonable prices between 17:00 and 18:30. A raffle will be held with the usual array of prizes and the medal presentation for the Lackford Mile.

How you can help –

Volunteers are required to help run the bar, teas & cakes stall, provide transport, help with games and stalls, supervise the bouncy castle and bungee-run.

Some families are bringing various salads to compliment the food bar. We need a food co-coordinator and salads!

Donations are required for the raffle and cake stall. Please deliver cake on the day.
Prize donations gratefully received before or on the day.

The Ceilidh – RSVP the Suffolk based ceilidh dance band will be playing live for the dancing which will start at about 19:30. This is usually very well attended and is a fantastic end to the day. All dances will be called and will be preceded by a run-through to learn the steps. It’s a great laugh and can be enjoyed by the whole family, from Granny to grandchildren.

How you can help – Just be there and dance.

We do no charge for entrance to the Fete or Ceilidh, It is sponsored by the Lackford Community Council (a registered charity) who dig deep into their pockets and rely on lots of goodwill to stage the event. We hope the community, their families and friends and the surrounding villages will support the event and make it a success. Spread the word and come and enjoy yourself.
